In addition, our brand new Town Creek Bike Park just opened off Sangamo Road – an off-road BMX-style bike park that is one of a kind! Finally, take a walk or bike ride on the Doodle Trail, a multi-use paved trail that connects our downtown to the City of Easley’s downtown. While you are in town, take a moment and visit the downtown amphitheater located at 114 West Main Street. This mixture of past and present is one of the factors which makes Pickens a place of historical interest and significance. Much of the City’s past is present today, giving a glimpse of its rich and fascinating heritage. The town of Pickens was founded in 1868 and named for the Revolutionary War hero General Andrew Pickens. In Pickens, you become part of the community. There is a Little Free Library location, as well as the Born Learning Trail. My kids love the park, and we can’t visit the trail without stopping there. The new trailhead, a mile-long extension, is closer to downtown near where the Silos is being built. The park has restrooms, a playground, a picnic area, and a place to rent bicycles for use on the trail. We like parking where the original trailhead is at the Easley Doodle Park. So it scurried backward from Easley like a doodlebug, hence the name. In 1898, the train service carried passengers and cargo back and forth between the towns, without the ability to turn around on its return to Pickens. The name of the trail is a remnant of the day when it was a working train track. That funny name kind of sticks with you once you hear it though. I’ll be honest II hadn’t learned of it until recently.
